Cebu: Queen City of the South

The province of Cebu is the center for trade and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao region. It is the hometown of world re-known furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue. His furniture designs made the province popular as furniture exporters. But before the boom of furniture industry in Cebu, it is already popular because of beautiful and historical tourist spots like:

  • Magellan’s Cross – it was named after the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who discovered the Philippines in 1500; it was also the start of Christianity in the country. The pieces from the original cross was incorporated in the cross displayed.
  • Sto. Niño Basilica – is another favorite place to visit when in Cebu; it is located just across the Magellan’s Cross. It was the only Catholic Basilica in East Asia; the Cebuanos patron saint is Sto. Niño.
  • Lapu-lapu Shrine – is where the Battle of Mactan took place, for historical exploration this place is must-see for the tourists.
  • Sinulog Festival – is the local counterpart of the Brazilian Mardi Gras. It is held every third week of January in celebration of the province’s patron saint, Sto. Niño
